Yomari (Newari Sweet Food)

Yomari SpecialYomari is a sweet Newari food specially made at the occasion of Yomari Punhi Day. Yomari Punhi is one of the most popular festival celebrated in Nepal specially by Newari people. It takes place in December during full moon day and is observed every year.On this full moon, people worship to Annapurna, the goddess of grains for the rice harvest.Groups of children goes door to door around their neighbourhood and beg for yomari in the evening which is also a way of celebrating Yomari Punhi festival in Nepal.In English Yomari Punhi can be pronounced as Full Moon of Tasty Bread.

Description: 

A Yomari is a collection of rice flour dough shaped like fig and is filled with brown cane sugar and seeds which is steamed. In Yomari , people keep Chakhu , a chocolate like food or Khuwa a ricotta cheese like liquid which make Yomari more delicious and tasty. The name "Yomari" comes from Newari words "Ya" meaning "to like" and "mari " means "delicacy". So, Yomari is a delicacy which is very popular.

To make it simple, It is a rice flour dumpling stuffed with Molasses and is sweet Newari dessert steamed and serve it hot.

 Ingredients


1.Rice flour- 500 grams

2.Chakku (Molasses)-100 grams

3.Sesame seed Powder – 50 gram

4.Coconut powder/ grated coconut-20 grams

5.Cardamom powder- 5 grams, Vegetable oil- 10 gram

 

 

Procedures


 

 

 

 

1. Heat a cup of water and chaku in pan at a medium heat

    When chaku melts, add sesame          powder, coconut powder and cardamom powder and stir it gently.

2. Add about a spoon full of rice flour and stir it gentlyWhen the paste is good (not too thick or too thin) pour it into a bowl



3.Make the dough for yomari using rice flour and Luke warm water


4.Make a soft dough (dough should be soft because if the dough is hard the yomari will break)


5.When the dough is ready cover it with soft piece of cloth and leave it for about half an hour.

 

After half an hour

 

6.Grease your palm with cooking oil so that the dough will not stick to your hand


7.Take a small piece of dough and make it first into round then into long yomari shape


8.Make as thin as you can because more thin your wrap is more tasty yomari becomes


9.Add two teaspoon of chhaku into the wrap and slowly close the yomori top.


10.You should keep on roiling the yomari while closing the top.


11.Heat the water in the steamer.


12.When water boils, put yomari in steamer and let it steam for about 10 minutes.


Now, Yomari is ready to Serve....
